Description
The Electropidolate bolus is unique as it uses the pidolate salt to bind to Calcium- it still contains and releases Calcium and Magnesium, but the pidolate has an additional mechanism of action which allows it to be the only bolus on the Irish market that can provide a 40hr duration protecting against clinical/subclinical hypocalcaemia from a single administration.
Calcium pidolate is formed from:
- Calcium molecule: chelated, organic calcium with high bioavailability and absorption
- Pidolate/Pyroglutamic acid- this is an amino acid precursor to Arginine and Proline:
- Arginine: When there is higher levels of pidolate, this increases arginine synthesis, increasing the Calcium binding proteins in the gut and so increasing Calcium absorption from the gut
- Proline: pidolate is required for the formation of glutamic acid, leading to L-proline and subsequently L-hydroxyproline. Collagen is the most abundant component of the extracellular bone matrix, and as collagen is composed of large amounts of L-Proline and L-Hydroxyproline, increasing these leads to the formation of new bone.

- The formation of new bone leads to bone remodelling by homeostasis, and so results in breaking down old bone by osteolysis, leading to endogenous release of Calcium and Phosphorus.
So in summary we have both Calcium and Phosphorus being released into the blood following the Electropidolate bolus administration. This is particularly important as we know in hypophosphataemia complicates nearly 55 % of the cases of milk fever.
Phosphorus:
Phosphorus release has been showed by the study attached to this email. The study compared administration of Calcium Pidolate boluses (orange and dark blue depending on pidolate concentration) with a calcium bolus containing no pidolate (purple), a group given 3 oral gel administations of Ca, Mg and Phos (light blue), and the control group (green).
You can see the electropidolate bolus achieved the highest levels of blood phosphorus, outperforming even the group that were given 3 oral administrations of phosphorus itself. The blood phosphosphorus increased from the point of bolus administration and peaked at 10hrs, with increases seen out to over 22hrs.
